Senior Directing Project Phillips Academy Andover | Spring 2017
FOB by David Henry Hwang is a story about desire, immigration, anger, and most importantly, belonging. When Steve -- a recent Chinese immigrant claiming to be the legendary Chinese hero, Gwan Gung -- enters the restaurant owned by Grace's family, Grace, Steve, and Grace's cousin, Dale, must confront their own emotions about their place in American society. The play examines the tension between established Chinese Americans and new "fresh off the boat" immigrants as they navigate the stereotypes, perceptions, and challenges of life in America.
I chose to direct this play because of how strongly it resonated with me and my own experiences growing up as a Chinese American in the suburbs of Boston. I especially wanted to highlight Grace's experience and center her as the protagonist and focus of the play. The project culminated in two sold-out shows.
