Assistant Director Phillips Academy Andover | Spring 2016 Dir. Allen Grimm
Black Gods of the Asphalt written by Onaje Woodbine explores the role of street basketball in the lives of African American youth. It follows the journey of three young basketball players and contradicts the narrative that basketball is played to create "a way out" of poverty. Rather, basketball is played because of the experience of playing.
As assistant director, I worked with individual actors to develop their characters and their voice even while the script evolved. This play premiered first at Phillips Academy Andover. In the summer of 2016, we traveled to South Africa where it was premiered at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
