Columbia Blue Glaze Theater | Fall 2019I’ve always loved the story of Alice in Wonderland. I think it’s because I am attracted to the colorful world and whimsical characters. As I dove into this process as an Asian American woman, I tried to find points of connection between my experiences and that of Alice. We leaned into the fun and whimsy and the color, but I also learned that Wonderland is a world that doesn’t quite work in the way I expect. Sentences come before verdicts. Cats talk and disappear. Mad Hatters have tea parties that go on forever. Sometimes it’s a little dangerous and a little frightening. Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes it’s ridiculous. So for this production, we really leaned into the idea of being strangers in a strange land.
